Greensky Bluegrass to celebrate 25th anniversary with hometown shows in Kalamazoo
Originating in Kalamazoo, Greensky Bluegrass is preparing to return to their hometown to mark their 25th anniversary with two special shows at Wings Event Center. The band’s guitarist/vocalist, Dave Bruzza, reflected on their humble beginnings, recalling their first show in a rental house on Wall Street in 2000. From wild nights with Seeds and Stems to the present day, Greensky Bluegrass has evolved into a powerhouse in the bluegrass scene.
The upcoming anniversary shows hold special significance for Bruzza, who spent much of his youth at Wings Event Center, where the band will now take the stage for this monumental event. The lineup for these performances includes special guests Sam Bush, Holly Bowling, and Lindsay Lou, all of whom feature on Greensky’s ninth studio album, “XXV.” This album is a unique compilation comprising unreleased originals, covers, and revamped versions of previous tracks, enriched by collaborations with artists like Billy Strings and members of String Cheese Incident. Hoffman, the mandolin player and vocalist, highlighted the diverse approaches taken to create this album, emphasizing the evolution of their musical journey.
Since their early days playing at local venues like Papa Pete’s and Olde Peninsula, Greensky Bluegrass has come a long way. Winning the Telluride Bluegrass competition nearly twenty years ago paved the way for international performances and headlining slots at major festivals. Celebrating the band’s longevity, Bruzza expressed gratitude for the opportunity to grace the stage at iconic venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. Despite their individual growth and changes over the years, the band has stayed true to their musical roots, evolving and adapting together to create a cohesive and dynamic sound.
While the band members now reside in different parts of the country, one thing remains constant – their deep connection to Kalamazoo. Greensky Bluegrass continues to honor their hometown roots, where they first started as a group of musicians with a shared passion for bluegrass music. As they gear up for their 25th anniversary shows, the band’s enduring bond and musical legacy serve as a testament to their collaborative spirit and unwavering dedication to their craft.
