Katee Sackhoff shared her experience facing backlash from fans during her appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in 2003 when she was booed for her role as Kara Thrace, also known as Starbuck, on “Battlestar Galactica.” In a recent interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Sackhoff revealed that the transition of her character from being played by a man, Dirk Benedict, in the original series to a female character faced initial resistance.

As she reminisced about the challenging beginning, Sackhoff recalled the negativity she encountered while connecting on the internet and browsing through message boards that were discussing the show. She stumbled upon a thread filled with hate towards her casting, which set the tone for her Comic-Con debut where she faced further booing from the audience.

Despite the early struggles and the emotional impact it had on her, Sackhoff credits her youth at the time for helping her weather the storm. At 23 years old, she had the blissful ignorance of youth that shielded her from being crushed by the criticism, although she admits it might have had a different impact on her if it happened today. Sackhoff emphasized that the negativity did not deter her as there were people championing the show and supporting her through the ordeal.

With the evolution of “Battlestar Galactica” from a miniseries to a full-fledged series, Sackhoff witnessed a change in the audience’s reception towards her character. The initial resistance slowly gave way to acceptance and even admiration from fans who admitted they were initially apprehensive but ended up loving the show.

Despite her pivotal role in the series, portraying a character as iconic as Starbuck, Sackhoff revealed that she had never watched the show in its entirety. In a surprising revelation, she mentioned that she plans to watch the series soon with her husband, Robin Gadsby, after years of avoiding it. Sackhoff’s dedication to her character was evident when she shared that she would watch certain scenes out of order to keep track of Starbuck’s storyline throughout the filming process.

As Sackhoff gears up to finally watch “Battlestar Galactica,” it serves as a reminder of the journey she undertook from initial resistance to eventual acceptance and appreciation from fans worldwide. Her resilience in the face of adversity and commitment to her craft have solidified her status as a pivotal figure in science fiction television, leaving an indelible mark on the genre.
