AXL Rose’s Buenos Aires Freakout: “It Was Exaggerated”
During a recent Guns N’ Roses performance in Buenos Aires, the band faced a rocky start as lead vocalist Axl Rose visibly lost his temper during the opening number, “Welcome to the Jungle.” After the incident, Guns N’ Roses provided a rather weak explanation for what took place, then soon after, guitarist Slash stepped in to share his perspective.
In an interview with Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, Slash expressed that the situation had been blown way out of proportion and what actually spurned Rose’s reaction was a technical glitch in his mix where the only audible sound he could hear was the drums. Technological hiccups can be immensely frustrating. Still, lashing out and tossing a microphone at the drummer probably isn’t the best way to express such frustration.
Slash assured that there was no animosity directed towards their new drummer, Isaac Carpenter. While Rose did end up tossing the microphone in Carpenter’s direction, it was not a reflection of any anger towards him. The confusion arose where people might have misinterpreted the freak out as an issue between Rose and Carpenter, which Slash addressed in the interview.
The guitarist shared that all members of the band use in-ear monitors instead of wedges for their on-stage monitors. Particularly on the first song, these monitors malfunctioned. Rose was desperately trying to alert the engineers about the drum sounds that were drowning out everything else. The initial moments of the set were fraught with chaos as they tried to rectify the technical issues. It became evident that Rose was merely trying to communicate the problem and sort out the issue urgently.
Slash emphasized that the situation was taken entirely out of context in public as the fans mistakenly interpreted the incident as Rose being angry with Carpenter. It was critical for the understanding that the issue essentially revolved around the technical glitch that disrupted the band’s set. It is essential to differentiate between technical mishaps and member animosities when such occurrences take place.
Nevertheless, amidst the chaos and misunderstanding, Slash wanted to ensure that the fans comprehend the true nature of the situation. The band, as a unit, works through technical glitches and challenges they face during live performances. Maintaining their professionalism, Guns N’ Roses strives to deliver electrifying performances to their fans globally.
