Brent Hinds’ legacy in the music world is not just limited to his work with Mastodon. According to one of his former bandmates, the late guitarist had a whole album of unreleased solo music awaiting the world’s ears.

Duane Trucks, who was part of Hinds’ psychobilly project Fiend Without A Face, shared exclusively with Metal Hammer that he had heard a collection of tunes from the guitarist, describing them as nothing short of “cool as shit.”

Trucks reflected on Hinds as a unique artist, portraying an artist who played straight from the heart without reservations: “You rarely meet someone with so many facets who does things in such an honest, vulnerable way. He really fucking meant what he was playing. It was not a put-on. He wasn’t just doing this for a cheque.”

Fiend Without A Face was a project started by Hinds in 1998, naming it after a British horror film from 1958. He later joined Mastodon and played a crucial role in propelling the band to international fame. Mastodon’s 2011 album, “The Hunter,” made it to Number Six on the Billboard 200, and the track “Sultan’s Curse” netted them a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2018.

Despite Mastodon’s success, Hinds remained connected to his outsider instincts, periodically returning to Fiend Without A Face for albums in 2011 and 2017. In 2025, he bid farewell to Mastodon and, tragically, passed away in an Atlanta motorcycle accident on August 20 at the age of 51.

Looking back on Hinds’ musical journey, it’s evident that his impact went beyond his time with Mastodon and his Fiend Without A Face project. The revelation of his unreleased solo album promises an exciting future glimpse into the mind and talent of a versatile, honest, and dedicated musician who played from a place of genuine passion.
