Mark Mallman, a well-known author, composer, and rock musician who has established himself in the Twin Cities, has recently released his 10th album titled “Magic Time.” This new album delves into dark themes, such as horror movies, ghost stories, the eternal battle between good and evil, and the fears associated with aging. Mallman takes his listeners on a haunting journey through his music, creating an eerie yet captivating atmosphere.

When asked about his experiences in Minneapolis as a Twin Citian since 1991, Mallman enthusiastically shares insights into his life and favorite spots in the city. Reflecting on his early days working as a salad chef at Mia’s cafeteria, Mallman recalls his appreciation for the Niçoise salad. He emphasizes the importance of embracing the winter spirit in Minnesota, highlighting the character trait of dancing in snowstorms, singing while shoveling snow, and laughing on ice.

Mallman’s interactions with defeat are unique, viewing creative stagnation as complacency and finding solace in friendly competitions, like the one he engages in at Can Can Wonderland with his childhood friend, Jeff. The artist opens up about his creative process, revealing that he often seeks reflection at The Basilica of Saint Mary, meditation at Lakewood Cemetery, and solace in prayer-induced screams of catharsis on the main stage at First Avenue.

In discussing his favorite haunts and pastimes, Mallman expresses his preference for indulging in his love for cappuccinos in the basement bar at Maison Margaux, paired with a Diet Coke. While he’s mindful of his health and proud of his 11 years of sobriety, he humorously admits to not being much of a morning person, revealing that he doesn’t brunch.

On topics ranging from Halloween costumes to fitness classes, Mallman’s lively responses offer a glimpse into his eclectic personality. From reminiscing about a memorable Halloween costume involving a can of duct-taped 7UP to praising HardShell Fitness for its impressive deadlifting feats, Mallman’s unique perspective shines through.

Throughout the interview, Mallman maintains a refreshing honesty and authenticity, conveying his creative spirit and passion for music and storytelling. His upcoming novel, set in the lush environs north of Fat Lorenzo’s, showcases his artistic prowess and vivid imagination. With his new album as a testament to his inventive genius, Mallman continues to captivate audiences with his haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.
