Megadeth recently announced that their upcoming album will be their final one, and fans were thrilled to discover that it would include a surprising addition to the tracklist. The band revealed that their last album would feature a cover of the title track from Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning,” a song that Dave Mustaine, the frontman of Megadeth, co-wrote during his time with Metallica.

Mustaine’s history with Metallica goes back to 1983 when he was ousted from the band just before the release of their debut album, “Kill ‘Em All.” Despite being fired, Mustaine had written several songs for Metallica, some of which appeared on their first two albums. The decision to cover “Ride the Lightning” on Megadeth’s final album was driven by a profound sense of respect for Metallica and, in particular, for James Hetfield.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mustaine explained that the cover was not about creating his version of the song but about paying tribute and showing respect. He highlighted Hetfield’s talent, both as a singer and as a guitar player, expressing his admiration for the iconic musician. Mustaine wanted to close the circle on his career, starting with his contributions to Metallica’s early songs and ending with a cover that he felt would be a fitting tribute.

The Megadeth version of “Ride the Lightning” differs slightly from Metallica’s original, being played in a lower key, faster, and sung with a unique twist. Mustaine revealed that neither Hetfield nor Lars Ulrich were aware of the cover until it was recorded. Initially, Mustaine planned to seek Hetfield’s approval, but ultimately decided that he was content with the rendition and the message of respect he intended to convey.

While the band does not plan to perform the track live, the inclusion of “Ride the Lightning” on Megadeth’s final album serves as a gesture of respect towards Metallica and a way for Mustaine to express his appreciation for his musical roots. The decision to include this cover on the album was a deliberate choice to ensure that no sentiments are left unaddressed as Mustaine prepares to conclude his illustrious career.

Months before the album announcement, Mustaine had hinted at a cover song during an interview at Norway’s Tons of Rock festival. While teasing the album’s contents, the frontman mentioned that they had 13 songs prepared for the record, with two additional tracks scheduled for release at a later date.

Fans eagerly anticipate the release of Megadeth’s final album, set to hit the shelves on January 23rd, featuring tracks like “Tipping Point,” “I Don’t Care,” “Hey, God?!” and the bonus cover of “Ride the Lightning.” This album promises to be a poignant and fitting conclusion to Megadeth’s legacy, with Mustaine’s cover symbolizing a respectful nod to his musical journey and the influence of Metallica on his career.
