SIMILE LAND – Young-Hee Explores the Universality of Melancholy
SIMILE LAND, a Korean indie rock band, has recently launched their EP ‘Young-Hee’, which delves into the depths of universal melancholy by presenting raw and heartfelt storytelling. The lead track, ‘Bottomless Jar (밑 빠진 독)’, encapsulates the perpetual loop of regret and unattainable longing while showcasing the band’s distinctive pastoral sensibility and robust rock sound. Since their inception in November 2023, this quintet has quickly made a name for themselves, securing the top spot at KT&G Sangsangmadang Band Discovery, claiming Bronze at Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival Super Rookie, and being featured in Muse:On. The EP ‘Young-Hee’ expounds on universal melancholy with remarkable precision, starting with ‘A Secret Even My Mom Doesn’t Know (우리 엄마도 모르는 비밀)’, where somber emotions gradually surface in a calculated manner, hinting at a hidden secret. Following this, ‘Narok (나락)’ bursts into a bluesy introduction before transitioning into captivating choruses, featuring Sim Aisle’s skillful vocals accompanied by powerful music. The subsequent skit ‘Shh..’ leads into ‘Should I See a Psychiatrist? (정신과에 가볼까)’, a track that is more direct and tumultuous, reflecting the turmoil experienced on different days. The title track ‘Bottomless Jar (밑 빠진 독)’ lays bare SIMILE LAND’s unfiltered authenticity, unfolding melancholy in a refreshing light that might beg the question of the absence of sadness. With delicate opening melodies and enchanting guitar and piano harmonies, the song narrates the tale of a character cursed akin to the daughters of Danaos in Greek mythology, endlessly pouring water into a bottomless jar without questioning the rupture or attempting to mend it, driven only by an insatiable appetite to fill it completely.
The EP concludes with the track ‘Balloon’, stripping down to piano, cello, and Sim Aisle’s vocals, creating a space filled with sighs from someone unsure if the liquid streaming down their face is tears or sweat, pondering the ownership of the greed that led to this emotionally charged moment.
