The Who recently released a Super Deluxe Edition of their final studio album recorded with founding drummer Keith Moon, “Who Are You.” This comprehensive release features over 70 previously unreleased tracks, including never-before-heard mixes, alternate takes, newly mixed live tracks from their first tour without Moon, and candid recordings of the band rehearsing in 1977 and 1978. The Super Deluxe Edition also includes brand-new Atmos and Stereo mixes by Steven Wilson, making it a must-have for fans.

“Who Are You,” originally released on August 18, 1978, marked a significant moment in The Who’s career shortly before Moon’s tragic passing on September 7. The title track was a standout anthem, reflecting the band’s shift towards the emerging influence of British punk rock. Pete Townshend’s intricate arrangements, incorporating synthesizers and strings, showcased The Who’s evolution while maintaining their powerful backing tracks.

The recording process for “Who Are You” was marked by challenges and creative tensions, leading to a Super Deluxe Edition that reveals the full story behind the album. This comprehensive set includes the rejected original Glyn Johns mix, providing an alternate perspective on the album’s production. The collection also features a newly remastered version of the released Jon Astley mix, fly-on-the-wall rehearsal sessions, and a wealth of unreleased material such as demos, alternate takes, and a recovered “lost” guitar solo for “Sister Disco.”

In addition to these unreleased gems, the Super Deluxe Edition captures playful moments in the band’s rehearsal sessions, including covers like “Barbara Ann” featuring Moon’s falsetto vocals and a Townshend guitar solo. Despite Moon’s tragic death in 1978, The Who regrouped with new drummer Kenney Jones and keyboard player John “Rabbit” Bundrick, eager to embark on a tour to support the album. The set includes two discs of career-spanning live recordings from The Who’s 1979 U.S. tour, offering fans a glimpse into the band’s electrifying live performances.

The Super Deluxe Edition is accompanied by a 100-page hardback book featuring extensive sleeve notes covering the album’s release, track-by-track details, session notes, and Wilson’s remixes. The book includes previously unpublished photographs, memorabilia, and original print ads, providing a comprehensive look at this pivotal period in The Who’s career. Whether on CD or vinyl, the Super Deluxe Edition of “Who Are You” is a must-have for fans looking to dive deep into the band’s musical journey.
