MUSIC REVIEW: “Wiggly Air” by Kurt Gottschalk
The legacy of legendary musician David Bowie continues to inspire artists even after his passing in 2016. One of the most profound tributes to Bowie is the instrumental interpretation of his final album, ‘Blackstar,’ titled Bowie Cello Symphonic: Blackstar. Renowned cellist Maya Beiser, accompanied by the Ambient Orchestra, delivered a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the album, attracting much attention. However, credit also belongs to the album’s arranger, Evan Ziporyn, a fellow Bang on a Can All-Stars member alongside Beiser. Ziporyn’s latest project, ‘Art Decade,’ delves into three earlier Bowie compositions, intertwining them with works by 1970s contemporaries Harold Budd, Brian Eno, and Robert Fripp.
Released on Bang on a Can’s Cantaloupe imprint, ‘Art Decade’ is a mesmerizing 7-part suite featuring the Canadian ensemble ContaQt, with Ziporyn showcasing his skill on the clarinet. Staying faithful to the original Bowie tracks – “Moss Garden,” “Sense of Doubt,” and “Neuköln” from the “Heroes” album – the arrangements capture the essence of the iconic musician’s work. The album begins with a rendition of Fripp’s “Red,” followed by a captivating interpretation of Fripp’s and Eno’s “Evening Star.” The nostalgic journey presented in ‘Art Decade’ pays homage to the influential artists and resonates with fans in a meaningful way.
In a departure from the rock ambiance of Bowie’s era, Van Halen emerged from Pasadena, infusing a sense of fun and innovation into their music. Guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle, recognized for her work with Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and as a touring member of Bikini Kill, embarked on a bold reimagination of Van Halen’s track “On Fire.” Through an extended, 25-minute improvisational performance, Lyle transformed the song into a poignant anthem, reflecting the turbulent times the world was facing. Titled ‘On Fire,’ Lyle’s album, released on Feeding Tube Records, offers a fresh perspective on the original track, maintaining a balance between its aspirational roots and contemporary relevance.
From the enchanting realms of French pop music emerges Hélène Barbier, infusing the sounds of the 1960s with modern sophistication. Barbier’s latest album, ‘Panorama,’ resonates with retro charm while infusing a contemporary edge into the genre. Drawing inspiration from yé-yé icons like France Gall and Françoise Hardy, Barbier and K&S deliver a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation. ‘Panorama’ exudes a whimsical quality juxtaposed with darker undertones, creating a dynamic listening experience that transcends time.
Embracing the essence of soul music from the 1970s, St. Panther, the musical persona of Dani Bojorges-Giraldo from Los Angeles, showcases a blend of old-school R&B with a contemporary twist in their latest EP, ‘Strange World.’ With a voice that exudes resilience and depth, St. Panther navigates the complexities of the modern world through soulful melodies and poignant lyrics. Despite the uncertainties of the times, ‘Strange World’ stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the human soul.
