In the recent months, Billboard has reported a significant rise in AI-generated “artists” making appearances on their music charts. Over the past several weeks, at least six AI-generated or AI-assisted artists have emerged on various Billboard charts, marking the beginning of a rapidly growing trend in the music industry.

One notable example of this phenomenon is Xania Monet, an AI avatar conceptualized by songwriter Telisha “Nikki” Jones. Jones crafts the lyrics for Monet before utilizing the platform Sumo to curate the music. Xania Monet made her chart debut in September, gaining widespread visibility and ultimately securing a lucrative deal with Hallwood Media. Her track “Let Go, Let God” debuted on the Hot Gospel Songs chart, eventually climbing to No. 3, while “How Was I Supposed to Know?” peaked at No. 20 on the Hot R&B Songs chart. Most recently, Xania Monet became the first AI artist to break into an Airplay chart, entering at No. 30 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart for the week of November 11.

Billboard’s report included a list of confirmed AI artists who have appeared on their charts. The verification process involved cross-referencing songs with Deezer’s AI detection tool, which identifies songs on its platform that were created using AI. Some of the artists also openly acknowledge their use of AI in their streaming platform descriptions.

For instance, on the chart dated August 16, ChildPets Galore debuted at No. 14 on the Christian Digital Song Sales chart with the track “The Only Thing I Can Take to Heaven,” attributed to songwriter Cindy Hugo. During the week of October 11, songwriter Terrance LeDoux introduced the AI-assisted project Unbound Music on the Emerging Artists chart, securing the No. 47 position with the song “You Got This,” which managed to climb to No. 10 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. Another AI-assisted endeavor, Enlly Blue by songwriter Thong Viet, made its debut at No. 44 on the Emerging Artists chart for the week of October 18, with its single “Through My Soul” reaching No. 15 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart.

Moreover, the contemporary Christian AI artist Juno Sky, developed by Nguyen Duc Nam, claimed the No. 44 spot on the Emerging Artists chart for the week of October 25. More recently, Breaking Rust entered the charts at No. 9 with two songs, with “Livin’ On Borrowed Time” reaching No. 5 on the Country Digital Song Sales and No. 13 on Digital Song Sales, while “Walk My Walk” secured the No. 14 spot on the Country Digital Song Sales chart.

The growing presence of AI-generated artists on music charts signals a profound shift in the industry, one that promises to reshape the landscape of music creation and consumption in the years to come.
