“Rocking Out with Laundry Day: On the Road with the Boys”
posted setlists on Instagram for our fans to see before the tour started so they could know what to expect. We’ve been playing a good amount of the old stuff mixed in with some new music. For “Light Up Shoes,” we did a medley with a bunch of other songs that was really, really fun. I think for us, the new stuff is always the most exciting for us to play, but we definitely love playing the old stuff, too. It’s been nostalgic and fun. It’s been a good mix of both and it feels like it tells a story playing both old and new during our set.
CHANG: That sounds incredible. It’s great that you’re able to keep the fans engaged with the old and new music. So, you’ve described your new album, EARWORM, as your most idiosyncratic and best record yet. Can you elaborate on that?
CIULLA-LIPKIN: Yeah, I think for sure. Just the process of writing the music this time around was different. We were in a different space and it was all about getting the songs out as fast as possible. It was less about melodies and more about vibes this time around. We were heavily influenced by the energy of shows we’ve been doing and the songs kind of came more out of things we’ve been learning. Our relationships with one another as bandmates have really deepened and I think we’re just beginning to figure out what a Laundry Day song needs to be. We were just doing things this time that we’ve never done before. We were like, “Fuck it, let’s try to make this as unique as possible.” I think we definitely succeeded with sounding like no one else out there right now. I feel confident saying that. I feel like no one could replicate what we did on this project because it was just so unique to the four of us and to the time we were in. It was just very special.
CHANG: That’s amazing to hear. It sounds like you really honed in on your unique sound and style with this album. How has touring the album impacted your relationships as a band?
PEARL: I think the biggest thing that we were all pleasantly surprised by on this tour is that we all really got comfortable with one another. We have this running joke–I don’t know if this is weird before I say it–but we sleep butt to butt.
CIULLA-LIPKIN: Yeah, we lay in the van and we sleep so head to feet, but butt to butt, and we sleep.
PEARL: By my European influence, I would say it’s like a spoon but more aggressive.
CIULLA-LIPKIN: What’s fun is, Henry’s ripped now, so his right side is like a wall of muscle. So my body is fully cushioned by abs.
WEINGARTNER: It’s kind of like sleeping against a tractor-trailer.
CIULLA-LIPKIN: It’s been a bonding experience. We’ve just been spending every single moment together, so it’s like, how to make the most with that.
WEINGARTNER: It’s weird, it’s weird because who sleeps like that? We play rose, thorn, bud before bed every night, which is where we each say the best part of our day, the worst part, and what we’re looking forward to for the future.
CIULLA-LIPKIN: And it’s been fun. It’s been a very intimate experience.
PEARL: It’s making the whole touring experience so much better and we’re just having so much fun with it.
WEINGARTNER: I feel like it’s crazy we didn’t have this figured out before. This is the first time we’ve really spent every single second together on tour, and now couldn’t imagine anyone else. It’s been so cool.
CIULLA-LIPKIN: Yeah, it’s so special. It’s our favorite tour so far, hands down, and I can speak for all of us saying that. Everything is just perfect.
CHANG: That’s incredible to hear. It sounds like this tour has really solidified your bond as a band. Lastly, what’s next for Laundry Day after this tour wraps up?
CIULLA-LIPKIN: Tour’s definitely coming to an end in the next couple of months. We’re going to take a little break, maybe a little time off, start writing again. We’re already talking about new music and new pieces for our next project, our next adventure. So we might start writing when we get off the road. Hopefully, that’ll be soon and getting back to it as fast as possible. That’s the plan. Just trying to get back in the studio, whip up some more bangers and just keep the train going. The momentum is there, so we’re just hoping
