Five individuals who have been bound by their shared love for rock ‘n’ roll since their teenage years have recently released a 25-song double-album of original music. These North Quincy High School alumni, four of whom graduated in the Class of 1987, together with a slightly older drummer, make up the band known as The Gypsy Moths.

The Gypsy Moths’ new album, titled “Here We Are,” is now available on Rum Bar Records, an independent label based in Boston. The band marked this release with a celebration on Halloween at The Burren in Somerville, with plans for more live performances in the near future. While they enjoy creating new music and experimenting in the studio, the band prefers to limit their live shows to ensure that each one is a special occasion. In light of their commitments to jobs and families, they have chosen not to embark on extensive tours for small paychecks.

Their journey to the release of “Here We Are” began with an EP called “Five by Five From Four,” launched by the Gypsy Moths last July. The EP’s single, “Still I Recall,” garnered attention on radio stations nationwide. Chris Conway, the band’s spokesperson and historian, along with his bandmates Steve O’Brien, Matt Miceli, Phil Thompson, and Dave Buckley, have maintained their bonds since the mid-1980s, despite pursuing individual careers.

Although the Gypsy Moths temporarily veered away from performing and playing music, their shared passion ultimately drew them back together 11 years ago. As they rekindled their musical connection, friends in the local music scene like Dennis White and Ben Stack provided them with performance opportunities. Initially focusing on cover songs, the band gradually transitioned to composing their own music, leading to the release of a vinyl record in 2019.

Inspired by the success of their initial release, the band delved deeper into creating original music, blending elements of ‘60s garage rock with a pop sensibility. Their relationship with Ed Reimer and Ed’s Barn Studio in Canton has helped shape the polished sound of their recent tracks. Having partnered with Rum Bar Records, a label dedicated to New England artists, the Gypsy Moths continue to embody the independent spirit of traditional record labels.

Drawing influence from iconic bands like The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Sloan, the Gypsy Moths have constructed a sound that captures the essence of classic rock while infusing modern touches. Their approach to songwriting, which often revolves around historical narratives and social commentary, showcases a deep connection to their Boston roots. With O’Brien leading the lyrical charge and Conway steering the musical direction, the band weaves engaging stories into their compositions.

As they navigate the music scene in their 50s, The Gypsy Moths have carved out a unique space for themselves. Embracing the art of storytelling through song, the band members have ventured beyond covers to establish a distinctive sound that pays homage to their influences while carving out their own path in the rock ‘n’ roll landscape.
