Bill Callahan to release new album ‘My Days Of 58’, listen to “The Man I’m Supposed To Be”
Bill Callahan has made his triumphant return! The enigmatic indie artist is set to drop his upcoming album, My Days Of 58, in the early months of next year. Fans of Callahan will recall his last solo offering, 2022’s YTI⅃AƎЯ. In a surprising turn of events last year, he collaborated on a few tracks with Noah Cyrus, a partnership that raised quite a few eyebrows.
For My Days Of 58, Callahan reassembled the same talented group of musicians who accompanied him on his YTI⅃AƎЯ tour. This ensemble includes guitarist Matt Kinsey, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, and drummer Jim White, along with additional contributions from fiddle maestro Richard Bowden, pianist Pat Thrasher, bassist Chris Vreeland, trombonist Mike St. Clair, and pedal steel virtuoso Bill McCullough.
In the Bandcamp description for My Days Of 58, Callahan sheds light on his creative process, stating, “Improvisation, unpredictability, the unknown – these are the elements that drive me in creating music. It’s all about listening, embracing oneself and others. Often, the most captivating moments in a recording arise from mistakes – turning them into strengths, using them as stepping stones towards something human.”
Callahan reveals that he recorded the basic tracks for most of the songs alongside drummer Jim White and later enlisted the other musicians to layer their parts. Describing the album as a “living room record,” Callahan clarifies that he is not referring to sound quality but rather the laid-back ambiance he sought to capture. He explains, “Living room attitude, living room vibe – not too overpowering or surreal. I wanted the horns to exude a relaxed vibe, as if someone casually playing on a couch, opposed to a grandiose celestial or infernal blast.”
The title of the album, My Days Of 58, hints at a contemplation on the passage of time and the process of aging. Interestingly, it is worth noting that Callahan actually celebrated his 59th birthday in June, lending a poignant reality to the themes explored on the record. The lead single, “The Man I’m Supposed To Be,” encapsulates this sentiment, with Callahan reflecting on embracing life’s inevitabilities and striving to live authentically – “Now my biggest fear is not the dying/ My biggest fear is that I’ll stop trying/ To be the man I am supposed to be.” It serves as a poignant love letter to life itself.
Scheduled for release on February 27th by Drag City, My Days Of 58 promises to be a reflective and introspective addition to Callahan’s expansive discography.
