Netflix to produce reboot of ‘A Different World’ with Debbie Allen onboard
Fans of the classic 1980s sitcom, “A Different World,” have reason to rejoice as Netflix has officially confirmed the production of a reboot. This long-awaited follow-up to the beloved show that focused on Black collegiate life is set to include 10 half-hour episodes that have been in the works for over a year.
The reboot will feature Tony Award-winning actor Maleah Joi Moon as the young daughter of the original series’ leads, enrolling at the historically Black college that her parents attended. Playing the role of free-spirited freshman Deborah Wayne, the show will center around her journey to forge her own path alongside a new generation of students at Hillman College.
In addition to Moon, the cast will also include talents like Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Kennedi Reece. Showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride, a former blogger turned TV writer and producer, is at the helm of the project. Emmy Award winner Debbie Allen, renowned for her roles in, produced, directed, and acted in the original series, has been chosen to direct three episodes, including the premiere.
Expressing her excitement for the project, Pride shared, “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life. I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine ‘A Different World’ for beloved fans and new generations alike.”
Other behind-the-scenes alums from the original show, including Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Mandy Summers, and Tom Werner, will join Pride and Allen as executive producers. Reflecting on their connection to the show, the Bythewoods stated, “‘A Different World’ changed everything for us. It was where we got our start as writers and where we found each other. This show has always been a part of our love story.”
Originally a spinoff of “The Cosby Show” on NBC, “A Different World” was rooted in the fictional Hillman College, a historically Black institution. Despite the departure of lead actress Lisa Bonet after one season, the series continued to captivate audiences with its talented ensemble cast, which included Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Sinbad, Charnele Brown, Cree Summer, and Glynn Turman.
With the reboot set to honor the legacy of the original while offering a fresh perspective for a new generation of viewers, fans can anticipate a nostalgic and exciting return to the world of “A Different World.”
