Pilot Crisis release catchy new single ‘No Vacancy’
Brisbane-based alternative rock band Pilot Crisis has made a triumphant return with their latest single, No Vacancy, showcasing their most refined and musically confident work to date. The song is a culmination of the band’s emo-pop roots, blending the raw vocal intensity reminiscent of early WAAX with the crisp, melodic guitar riffs reminiscent of Paramore’s prime.
No Vacancy delves into the frustration of wasted time and unfulfilled potential, resonating deeply with guitarist and songwriter Mitch Chen. “I found myself idly sitting on the couch watching TV and strumming the guitar, realizing how much time I spent merely existing,” Chen reflects. “Hours slipped away while I daydreamed about doing something more meaningful, yet failing to summon the motivation to act upon it.”
Lead vocalist Evie Cowen embraced No Vacancy as an opportunity to push her vocal boundaries and explore new dimensions in her delivery. “The song inspired me to experiment with different vocal techniques and performance styles,” Cowen shares. “It’s been a valuable learning experience that encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and infuse some fun elements into my singing.”
Meticulously produced and mixed by Matt Cochran from Talk Heavy at Birthday Boy Studios, and mastered by Brock Weston of Bugs, No Vacancy is enriched by the mentorship of Brisbane’s local music scene luminaries. The track follows a series of live performances supporting popular Queensland bands like Beddy Rays and sharing the stage with Vipersnatch, solidifying Pilot Crisis as one of the most promising young acts in Brisbane.
Pilot Crisis emerged from the ashes of the disbanded six-piece group Loiter, with core members Mitch Chen (guitar), Brandon Day (guitar/synth), and Tim Ricketts (drums) reinventing themselves under the new persona of Pilot Crisis. They were later joined by powerhouse vocalist and cellist Evie Cowen and bassist Connor Barnden, forming an immediate musical kinship.
“When Loiter disbanded, we knew we still had a story to tell,” Chen recalls. “Pilot Crisis became our outlet to channel that creative energy into something fresh, authentic, and a little chaotic.” Their debut single, Misguided, unveiled in 2023, tackled political themes and shed light on societal shortcomings in supporting the vulnerable. “I went through a string of negative experiences that forced me to leave my job and rely on a broken system,” Cowen reveals about the inspiration behind the track.
From the success of Misguided, Pilot Crisis continued their musical journey with Sad Sunshine, infusing elements of electro-pop, followed by Turning On The Tele in 2024, which expanded their sonic horizons with string arrangements reminiscent of Panic! At The Disco. With No Vacancy, Pilot Crisis maintains their signature emotional storytelling, intricate guitar work, and addictive hooks, showcasing a band that continues to evolve with each release.
