3 Timeless Rock Songs That My Kids Adore

Being a dad these days comes with responsibilities that extend beyond just providing for your kids and ensuring they get a good education. As a father, you also have to play a role in shaping their taste in music. And surprisingly, my kids seem to have a soft spot for what is commonly referred to as “dad rock.”

Gone are the days of nu-metal and hardcore dominating the airwaves. Now, it’s all about introducing the younger generation to the classics that their boomer grandparents grew up listening to. Bands like Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, and Soundgarden are all part of the musical education I’m providing for my children.

In addition to these iconic bands, my kids also seem to have a fondness for some classic dad rock songs that have found their way onto our family’s playlist. One such track is “Coming Undone” by Korn. Initially a surprise for me, given my preference for Korn’s earlier hits like “Blind” and “Freak on a Leash,” this song has grown on me as I’ve listened to it with my 12-year-old.

Another favorite in our household is “Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit. Interestingly enough, this song has become a coping mechanism for me during times of road rage. Whenever I find myself getting frustrated with inconsiderate drivers, my daughter knows to play this song to help me calm down.

And then there’s the slightly more controversial pick of “Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny” by Bloodhound Gang. I can’t really take credit for introducing this song to my kid—it’s all thanks to my friend Jayson, who is a die-hard Bloodhound Gang fan. Through our shared love of music, Jayson and I have bonded over the years, attending concerts together and sharing our favorite tracks.

While I may not always approve of the song choices that my kids gravitate towards, I can’t deny the joy it brings to see them enjoying music from different eras and genres. Whether it’s headbanging to Korn or singing along to Limp Bizkit, these moments of shared musical appreciation create lasting memories that I hope will stay with them as they grow older.

So, as a dad navigating the complexities of raising kids in a digital age, I’ve come to appreciate the power of music in bridging generational gaps and creating lasting connections with my children.
