Thomas Gottschalk addresses fans after strong reactions to ZDF appearance
Thomas Gottschalk’s recent appearance on ZDF has sparked controversy, with many criticizing his performance on “Der Quiz-Champion” and questioning his suitability for the show. Despite facing harsh feedback from viewers, the TV star has offered a surprising explanation for his performance.
Viewers were quick to express their disappointment with Gottschalk’s appearance, with one audience member commenting, “Young man, he has really deteriorated. Almost scary.” Others echoed this sentiment, with one viewer labeling Gottschalk as a “complete misfit for a quiz show” and another accusing him of lacking knowledge in the assigned category. Despite being invited by moderator Johannes B. Kerner as an expert in film and television, Gottschalk was effortlessly defeated by three contestants (3:1, 3:2, 3:0).
However, in a post on Instagram on the day of the TV broadcast, Gottschalk addressed the criticism with a surprising confession. He revealed, “Johannes B. Kerner belongs (with a few others) to the group of colleagues that I appreciate.” This appreciation was the reason he accepted the invitation, even though he admitted to having limited knowledge in the designated field of film and television. Gottschalk explained, “I have done more in both areas than I have watched.”
Despite the negative reception of his performance, Gottschalk considered the evening to be a success. He shared, “I met Jürgen von der Lippe and Wigald Boning at the event – I was delighted by that.” Additionally, he praised the “Quiz-Champion” contestants, describing them as “truly top-notch” and acknowledging their expertise. At 75 years old, his motto remains, “I only do things that bring me joy.”
Opinions on Gottschalk’s performance were divided on social media, with some users expressing pity for him while others defended him, emphasizing the need for respect and gratitude rather than ridicule. This discussion raised the important question of when is the right time for TV personalities to step away from the limelight.
Looking ahead, Gottschalk has already marked the Saturday evening off his calendar. He is set to make his final appearance on “Denn Sie wissen nicht, was passiert!” on RTL on December 6, signaling an end to his time hosting prime-time shows. Fellow hosts Günther Jauch and Barbara Schöneberger are also rumored to be leaving the show.
