The Pogues Release First Live Performance of “Fairytale of New York”
In a moment of nostalgia and musical resurrection, The Pogues have unearthed a time capsule from 1987, revealing the first-ever live rendition of their iconic track Fairytale Of New York. This historic performance, captured at Glasgow Barrowland on 17 December 1987, marked the debut of Kirsty MacColl singing the notorious duet with the band, forever engraving the show in Pogues history. The original producer, Steve Lillywhite, has meticulously restored the recording, breathing new life into the raw desk tape while preserving the night’s electrifying energy.
Fairytale Of New York had only recently made its global debut, recorded in August 1987 and released in November of the same year. The song had started to garner recognition as a timeless Christmas classic, yet the audience at Barrowland that night could not have foreseen the track’s lasting impact. Crafted by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan, Fairytale Of New York underwent two years of revisions and studio transformations before culminating in Kirsty’s indelible vocal performance.
The Barrowland concert marked the genesis of Kirsty’s on-stage rendition of the duet with The Pogues. The rereleased track is part of a new Zoetrope 12” vinyl EP, set to release on 12 December. Featuring artwork inspired by the original music video for Fairytale Of New York, the EP bridges the new release with the song’s inception period. In addition to the original and live versions of the title track, the EP includes an instrumental version and a live recording of Dirty Old Town from the same 1987 show, available on streaming and download platforms.
Since its inception, Fairytale Of New York has evolved far beyond its initial impact, making multiple returns to the UK Top 20 and earning the title of the most played Christmas song in the UK in the 21st century.
