50-Year friendship culminates in final night with ’70s band: Ethan Carey shares story on i95 ROCK
In the year 1972, following my graduation from Ithaca College with a degree in Communications, I found myself at a crossroads in my life. Eager to embark on a career in radio, I was approached by my longtime friend and gifted songwriter, Garry Manuel, with a proposition that I simply couldn’t resist: “Let’s start a duo,” he proposed. And just like that, Sunup was born, and I eagerly threw myself into the project.
Together with bassist Charlie Castilano, we honed our harmonies and crafted a repertoire brimming with original compositions, covers of iconic artists such as Neil Young, The Eagles, and a generous sprinkling of Seals & Crofts. For seven years, we tirelessly pursued our musical aspirations, playing in various venues ranging from bars to coffeehouses to stages across Upstate New York. It was a raw, exhilarating, and incredibly fulfilling period in our lives, fueled by hope and the belief that we were on the brink of something big.
However, the year 1979 saw me make a significant career shift back to radio, securing a position at the esteemed Home of Rock & Roll — I-95 — where I have remained ever since. As my focus shifted, Sunup gradually receded into the background, becoming a cherished memory from days gone by. Yet, the bonds of friendship forged during that time endured the test of time.
Fast forward to 2024, when Garry and I came together once again in a basement studio, breathing new life into our musical partnership and embarking on an unexpected journey culminating in the creation of a fresh album titled The Key Is Love, expertly produced by Garry’s son, Marshall Manuel. The reunion served as a catalyst for a resurgence in our passion and creativity, paving the way for a remarkable event that was to unfold on November 13, 2025, at Kraverie in Saratoga Springs.
That singular evening marked the celebration of “Sunup Bash – 50 Years of Music & Friendship,” where the original spirit of Sunup was reignited, drawing in a crowd comprising family, friends, and loyal fans who had faithfully followed our musical odyssey since the early days. The performance was a poignant homage to the songs that had initially united us fifty years ago, delivered with newfound vigor and passion by a band of exceptional musicians handpicked by Garry.
The harmonies that once defined our sound resonated throughout the venue, evoking a sense of nostalgia and reminding us of a fundamental truth: while music may fade, friendships endure. Sunup, it appeared, had never truly set, its brilliance shining as brightly as ever.
