FORBIDDEN parts ways with guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain
Forbidden has officially parted ways with guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain from Voivod and announced Jeremy Von Epp as his replacement. The breakup was amicable, and the band is already working on new music following the split. Mongrain had joined the band in 2024 after the departure of Steve Smyth.
Forbidden expressed their warm welcome to Von Epp, highlighting that Mongrain was their top choice. Despite Mongrain’s commitments with Voivod, he contributed to three songs on Forbidden’s new album. However, logistical issues arose during live performances at events like the Aftershock festival in Sacramento, prompting the need for Von Epp to step in.
Von Epp seamlessly transitioned into the band, impressing everyone with his quick learning abilities, especially given the big shoes he had to fill from guitarists like Glen Alvelais, Tim Calvert, and Steve Smyth. After reassessing the band’s situation upon returning from Colombia, the decision was made to keep Von Epp on a permanent basis due to the chemistry and talent he brought to the group.
Mongrain expressed his gratitude for his time in Forbidden, citing the challenge of balancing commitments with Voivod as a contributing factor to his departure. Despite the bittersweet farewell, he commended the band members for their camaraderie and friendship, making his time with them unforgettable. Mongrain passed the torch to Von Epp, confident in the band’s bright future under his guidance.
In his statement, Von Epp shared his excitement about joining Forbidden, having been a fan of the band for years. He found learning the band’s material challenging but enjoyable, especially after witnessing their performances at festivals like Aftershock and Grita. Von Epp looks forward to continuing Forbidden’s legacy and playing iconic thrash metal alongside the talented group of musicians.
The transition from Mongrain to Von Epp represents a new chapter for Forbidden, with the band gearing up to create more music and deliver electrifying performances. The lineup change signals a fresh start for the iconic Bay Area thrash metal band, with Von Epp poised to take the band to new heights. Fans can expect an exciting journey ahead with Forbidden’s revitalized lineup, promising to keep the spirit of thrash metal alive and well.
