Video Of The Week: Where We Sleep – Headlong

0

Where We Sleep has released a captivating new single titled ‘Headlong,’ accompanied by a thrilling video. The song is filled with layers of slashing and simmering fuzz box riffing by Mark Wallbridge (known for Vasko The Pig and Queen Horizon), complemented by stabby synth lines, looping beats, and the powerful vocals of Beth Rettig. With mix and mastering by Guy Fixen (credited for My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Lush), the track echoes the goth sounds of the 80s, the dark alt-rock vibes of Garbage, and the shadowy gaze of Curve. The intense and dramatic vocals by Beth Rettig create an atmosphere of edgy paranoia and noir that feels like losing control.

The accompanying video, directed by Connor Hurley, mirrors the chaotic and tumultuous times we live in, portraying an individual’s struggle for control amidst uncertainty. The video features Beth Rettig navigating between the passenger and driver’s seat, symbolizing the constant struggle for autonomy and escape from chaotic situations.

In describing the song, Rettig explains that it is about escaping from a chaotic black hole, realizing the need to extricate oneself from a situation and regain control. Beth Rettig rose to prominence as part of the band BLiNDNESS, where she collaborated with Debbie Smith (from Curve and Echobelly). Their band was signed to AC30 Records and shared stages with artists like Lene Lovitch and Viv Albertine.

‘Headlong’ is a precursor to Where We Sleep’s upcoming second album, ‘The Arsonist,’ scheduled for release early next year. Following their debut album ‘The Scars They Leave’ and EP ‘Experiments In The Dark,’ Where We Sleep has graced line-ups alongside acts like Desperate Journalist and Miki Berenyi. The band will be showcasing tracks from the new album live on the Loud Women radio show on Resonance FM, joined by Jo Gate Eastley and Ms Mohammed. They will also perform the track ‘Write My Name,’ a collaborative effort with Ms Mohammed to raise funds for MSF and Medical Aid for Palestinians.
