Today marks the release of a new album from the iconic Long Island rap trio, De La Soul, which is quite unbelievable. The group’s previous LP, the independently crowd-funded …And The Anonymous Nobody, came out in 2016 after an 18-year hiatus. Recently, De La Soul has focused on making their early classic albums available on streaming platforms. Their entire discography became accessible on streaming services in 2023, shortly after the tragic passing of De La Soul member Dave, also known as Trugoy The Dove. However, the group managed to record new music before Dave’s untimely death, resulting in the release of De La Soul’s latest and likely final album, Cabin In The Sky.

Cabin In The Sky is part of Massive Appeal’s Legend Has It… series, which showcases new albums from legendary rap veterans in 2025. Similar to the posthumous records from Mobb Deep and Big L in the Legend Has It… collection, Cabin In The Sky features Dave’s vocals throughout the LP. The album also includes tracks produced by Dave himself, as well as notable beats from prominent figures like DJ Premier and Pete Rock, with the latter producing the lead single “The Package.”

Numerous artists who have longstanding connections with De La Soul, as well as those who admire their work, are featured on Cabin In The Sky. For example, fellow Native Tongue member Q-Tip makes an appearance on the album. Q-Tip experienced a similar situation when A Tribe Called Quest released We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service in 2016 following the passing of Phife Dawg. Additionally, the album includes collaborations with renowned artists such as Nas, Killer Mike, Slick Rick, Common, Black Thought, Bilal, Yummy Bingham, and Yukimi from Little Dragon. Although De La’s longtime collaborator Prince Paul is not officially credited, his influence can be felt in the album’s construction, which includes playful transitions and an introductory roll call by Giancarlo Esposito. Upon the initial listen, the album exudes a sense of tired warmth that is both comforting and poignant.

Cabin In The Sky is now available for listeners to explore, offering a glimpse into De La Soul’s final creative output. This new album presents an opportunity for fans and enthusiasts to engage with the group’s music once again and appreciate the contributions of the late Dave, ensuring that his legacy lives on through their artistry.
