The latest Beatles Anthology installment sheds light on the Fab Four’s final single, revealing the behind-the-scenes story of their last record release. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Anthology, an expansion of a project initially conceived in the early ’70s by Beatles associate Neil Aspinall but delayed due to the group’s breakup. Featuring John Lennon’s posthumous contributions, the Anthology was a pivotal moment where the band told its own story, accompanied by the release of two new singles, “Free As a Bird” and “Real Love,” created from Lennon’s recording demos.
This year, a ninth episode directed by Oliver Murray has been added to the Anthology series, along with a fourth volume of companion albums, curated by Giles Martin, son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin. These albums feature remixed versions of the singles, as well as “Now and Then,” which was touted as the Beatles’ final single released in 2023. Reflecting on these projects, Giles Martin shared, “People think there’s a huge planning system to what we do, and there really isn’t. We’re amateur at best — we just seem to get away with it. I suppose it has an element of high risk involved in it.”
Having been immersed in Beatles music from an early age, Martin’s involvement in reshaping classic albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles, and Abbey Road, as well as recent projects like the Peter Jackson documentary “Get Back,” showcases his dedication to preserving the authenticity of the band’s legacy. Martin’s approach to these reissue projects is rooted in respect for the original recordings, noting, “My job is to represent as truthfully and as best I can what [the music] is. I never, ever wanted to change what the Beatles are playing. The heartbeat of the Beatles is always there.” This commitment to honoring the band’s essence allows for an honest and genuine revival of their musical catalog for new and old fans alike.
In his role as a curator of the Beatles’ music, Martin emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of the band’s sound. While he acknowledges the scrutiny his work undergoes during the reissue process, he remains steadfast in his mission to showcase the group’s unparalleled musical prowess. Discussing his collaboration process, Martin explains, “In any of these projects what happens is I’ll do a mix and select outtakes and send them to all of them, then discuss… They were a great band. The sum of them together is greater than the individuals.”
Overall, the latest Beatles Anthology installment offers a poignant look at the band’s journey, encapsulating the magic and creativity that defined their music. Through the meticulous work of individuals like Giles Martin and Oliver Murray, the Beatles’ legacy continues to be celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
