Flight To London, a musical collaboration between Jimmy McGorman and Robb Vallier, is gearing up for their debut album release titled “Instructions For Losing Control.” The album, set to release tomorrow, November 21, via earthprogram/Virgin Music, is a nod to the ’80s music icons like Tears For Fears, Phil Collins, and Depeche Mode. They describe their album as a blend of modern relationships, digital-age anxiety, and a unique nostalgia for eras possibly never experienced. The tracks on the album are meticulously crafted with lush harmonies, vintage synth textures, unexpected key changes, and a production that combines analog warmth with digital precision. Their debut song, “No One’s Forgiven,” delves into the chaos of the current political climate, media influence, and societal fatigue.
In a recent interview, Jimmy and Robb opened up about their music, influences, and more. They highlighted a track called “Walls” from their album, describing it as a multi-faceted piece with hooks, groove, lyrical depth, harmonies, melodies, and a synth solo – offering something for every listener. The song also weaves philosophical and social themes into a pop track, keeping it fresh with key changes and unexpected elements.
Discussing their musical backgrounds, Jimmy mentioned his musical lineage, with his father being a singer and pianist, while Robb’s musical journey was influenced by an older brother, exposing him to genres like progressive music. When asked about dream collaborations, both Jimmy and Robb expressed interest in working with esteemed producers like Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, along with songwriting sessions with Tears For Fears members. Outside the studio, Jimmy enjoys watching movies with his daughter and sports with his wife, while Robb unwinds by camping and immersing himself in nature.
Describing their music as intellectual pop or dark synth-pop with a modern twist, Flight To London has drawn comparisons to Tears For Fears and Scritti Politti. Despite positive reviews, the band has been surprised by criticisms labeling their music as merely “pleasant,” emphasizing that they aim to create more than just easy-listening music.
In their downtime, the band opts for Door Dash for meals, and music sessions often involve Jimmy on the piano, playing ’80s hits while Robb joins in with vocals. Sharing celebrity encounters, both members recalled star-struck moments with J Lo on separate occasions. If not musicians, Jimmy would consider a career in teaching, while Robb values the freedom from conformity that music offers, highlighting that a desk job would not suffice.
