Greg Rahn, a jazz keyboardist and composer from the Bay Area, is preparing to launch his eagerly anticipated second album, “Side Hustle,” on January 16th, 2026. After the successful debut of his first album, “Rent Party,” five years ago, Rahn is back with a collection of eight original compositions that draw inspiration from various musical influences that have shaped his career.

“Side Hustle” is a musical journey through fusion, New Orleans funk, Cuban rhythms, and more, showcasing Rahn’s versatility and expertise across different genres. With a lineup of talented musicians including Drew Zingg on guitar, Steve Evans on bass, Mick Mestek on drums, and Derek Rolando on percussion, the album promises a vibrant and authentic sound that captures the essence of each style Rahn explores.

Rahn’s ability to seamlessly navigate different musical styles can be traced back to a pivotal encounter with one of his piano heroes, Chick Corea, who advised him not to limit himself and to pursue his musical interests wholeheartedly. Taking this advice to heart, Rahn embarked on a creative journey that led him to develop a unique and diverse sound that is evident in “Side Hustle.”

The album’s production began in 2017, with Rahn assembling a group of seasoned musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area to bring his compositions to life. However, a creative roadblock in 2018 prompted Rahn to set the project aside temporarily and focus on a solo piano album, “Rent Party.” Inspired by the rich piano traditions of New Orleans and Harlem, “Rent Party” paid homage to iconic figures in the genre and served as a nod to the vibrant musical culture of the 1920s and 1930s.

Tragedy struck in April 2025 with the untimely passing of Zingg and Evans, Rahn’s friends and collaborators on the album. Their deaths served as a poignant reminder of life’s transient nature, prompting Rahn to resume work on “Side Hustle” and dedicate the album to their memory. The album’s completion was a labor of love, with additional contributions from talented musicians and meticulous attention to detail in the mixing and mastering process.

As the release date for “Side Hustle” approaches, Rahn reflects on his musical journey, grateful for the advice and mentorship he received from Chick Corea early in his career. His diverse musical influences and collaborations have shaped his unique sound, allowing him to explore various genres and styles with confidence and creativity. With “Side Hustle,” Rahn is excited to share his compositions with the world and pay tribute to the rich tapestry of music that has inspired him throughout his career.
