Kylie Minogue reveals new Christmas album for 10th anniversary with original track
Kylie Minogue is set to release a special Christmas single after a decade in the making. The 57-year-old singer’s newest track, Xmas, takes inspiration from the Village People’s 1978 hit, YMCA. Kylie reminisced about the song’s origins, recalling a summer evening in 2015 at Soho House in Berlin. She had just completed her first Christmas album and was enjoying a few glasses of wine when the idea for Xmas struck her – a festive take on YMCA. The chorus had been lingering in her mind for ten years, waiting for the perfect moment to come to life.
The music video for Xmas showcases Kylie performing the iconic flying dance move from Dirty Dancing. Despite her extensive stage experience, the Can’t Get You Out Of My Head star confessed to feeling a bit apprehensive about executing the move. She shared her thoughts, saying, “I was a bit scared as I’ve never done it before. It was a fantasy moment. I was told not to overthink it.” After a few practice runs, Kylie successfully nailed the move, even if it meant a few bruises the next day.
While Kylie acknowledges that it would be remarkable if Xmas topped the festive charts, she remains realistic about its chances. She stated, “I’m not counting on it. It would be crazy, but that’s definitely parked to one side for me.” Kylie expressed her contentment with the fact that ten years have passed since her last Christmas album, emphasizing the joy of consistently creating music over the years.
After a whirlwind two years filled with two albums and a lengthy 66-date Tension world tour, Kylie is contemplating taking a step back from the spotlight. However, this doesn’t mean she will stop working entirely. Kylie shared her plans, saying, “It feels like I haven’t stopped. It’s been a gigantic year, but I imagine I will be making music just for the love of it and maybe banking some things.” Despite considering a break, she confessed her love for being in the studio and how it continues to bring her immense satisfaction.
Reflecting on the process of creating the Christmas album while on breaks during the Tension Tour, Kylie admitted that it may not have been the wisest decision. Still, the experience of working on the album was one that she thoroughly enjoyed. Although uncertain about the album’s release, Kylie hinted at potentially focusing on the background work for future projects.
