Tinsley Ellis Reveals Upcoming Album ‘Labor Of Love’
Tinsley Ellis is set to release his new album, “Labor of Love,” on January 30, 2026. This album marks his second acoustic endeavor after the Blues Music Award-nominated “Naked Truth” from 2024. Unlike “Naked Truth,” “Labor of Love” will feature all original material. The album will be accessible in various formats, including CD, Georgia peach-colored vinyl LP, and digital platforms. The lead single from the album, “Hoodoo Woman,” is now available, accompanied by a visually captivating music video directed by Troy Bieser.
Ellis shares that “Hoodoo Woman” is inspired by his admiration for Mississippi Hill Country Blues, derived from influential artists like R.L. Burnside. The song embodies Ellis’s connection with the genre, rooted in his personal experiences performing alongside Burnside. This track sets the tone for a deeply raw and heartfelt collection of 13 original compositions featured on “Labor of Love.” Each song narrates contemporary stories of floods, voodoo spirits, personal struggles, and spiritual reflections. From the wild and untamed energy of “Hoodoo Woman” to the soulful vibes of “Long Time,” Ellis authentically inhabits each composition, drawing from his four decades of musical journey.
Taking a break from recording, Ellis immersed himself in the blues-rich town of Bentonia, Mississippi. There, he absorbed the essence of this historical Delta town, delving into the roots of genuine Bentonia blues with legends like Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. His encounters and performances with Holmes at the renowned Blue Front Café left a lasting impact on Ellis, influencing the essence of his music. This experience significantly shaped the narrative and emotions conveyed throughout “Labor of Love.”
For this album, Ellis experimented with six distinctive open tunings on his treasured 1969 Martin D-35, 12-string Martin D-12-20, and 1937 National Steel O Series guitars. Additionally, he incorporated mandolin into three tracks, a first in his illustrious career. The utilization of different instruments and tunings brought forth new possibilities and revitalized Ellis’s artistic inspiration, infusing the album with a rich, diverse sound profile.
Since the release of “Naked Truth” in 2024, Ellis has embarked on a solo acoustic tour across the country under the moniker “Two Guitars And A Car.” This stripped-down approach to performing blues has enabled Ellis to reconnect with the fundamental essence of the genre. Driven by his passion for the music and deep-rooted influences from blues legends like Muddy Waters and B.B. King, Ellis continues to captivate audiences with his timeless sound and storytelling prowess. His dedication to the blues is evident as he embarks on this labor of love, paying homage to the genre that has shaped his illustrious career.
