Abbie Callahan is the Next Big Thing
Abbie Callahan’s musical journey from a county fair in Iowa City to big country music stages has been extraordinary. Starting with real-life emotional songs as a teenager, she ventured to Nashville, studying songwriting while working late-night gigs on Broadway to pay her way through Belmont University. Experimenting with ’90s rock and grunge, she gradually crafted her unique sound, which she describes as “kaleidoscope country.”
Her debut EP, Grossly Aware, released on July 25 via Twelve6 Entertainment, showcases her versatile talent across seven tracks that blend Americana, indie pop, bluegrass, and folk. This raw, reflective collection dives into authenticity and unfiltered emotions, resonating strongly with overthinkers and underdogs.
After signing with WME, Abbie Callahan gained momentum with her empowering single “Simon Says” and is preparing to release her first collaboration in January, hinting at more music on the horizon.
Reflecting on her Iowa upbringing, Abbie recalls a county fair contest at the age of 10 that sparked her interest in guitar after losing to a girl who sang and played. Fuelled by competition and jealousy, she picked up the guitar, eventually leading to her musical journey.
Her late-night gigs on Broadway playing ’90s rock covers were pivotal in shaping her artist identity, teaching her about stage presence, audience reactions, and broadening her musical repertoire. Growing up listening to pop radio and her mom’s favorites, she only started forging her musical identity after exploring music independently.
Describing her sound as “kaleidoscope country,” Abbie signifies color, evolution, and experimentation while staying grounded in her folky roots. Her debut EP’s title, Grossly Aware, reflects its brutal honesty and introspection, capturing her current state of hyper-awareness and self-reflection.
Abbie’s EP resonates with overthinkers and underdogs as she delves into personal themes in tracks like “Cold” and “I’ll Bring Flowers.” Drawn to vulnerability and authenticity, these songs are a reflection of her experiences and emotions.
Having accomplished milestones like releasing her EP and debuting at CMA Fest, Bonnaroo, and AMERICANAFEST, Abbie feels grateful and motivated to keep pushing boundaries in her musical journey. Her rare story of coming from Iowa and working hard to establish herself has inspired many and continues to motivate her to create music that resonates with her audience.
