Streetlight Cadence takes Oxygen Tour to Maui
Streetlight Cadence, an alt-folk rock band featuring Clara Stegall, Jon Andrew Franklin, and Ben Chai, emerged from the streets of Waikiki where they started out as buskers. Known for their infectious indie folk-pop sound, the band released a holiday EP titled “Chillin'” a few years ago, which showcased their unique take on classic tunes like Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” and the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”
Ben Chai, a member of Streetlight Cadence, reflected on the recording process of the EP, noting that they completed the entire project in a single night. The band has received accolades for their music, winning Alternative Album Hōkū awards for “Kalakaua Avenue” and “Beyond Paradise.” Their distinctive sound, characterized by unique instrumentation and energetic performances, has garnered praise from publications like Americana Highways.
Currently, Streetlight Cadence is gearing up to release their first album in four years, titled “Oxygen,” which was executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Ken Caillat. The title track, inspired by a trip to Mauna Kea, captures the essence of the band’s musical journey over the past three years. Chai shared that the album is a collection of songs that were written based on their experiences during the second season of their TV show, “We’ll Play For Food.”
The band’s travels and performances are documented in their Emmy-nominated series, “Will Play For Food,” which follows them as they entertain audiences in different cities. The show highlights the importance of music and art in local communities and explores the impact of their performances on various audiences. Despite being spread out across different locations, Streetlight Cadence remains connected through their shared passion for music.
In addition to their upcoming album release, Streetlight Cadence continues to expand their musical horizons individually. Clara Stegall, the band’s guitarist and vocalist, recently launched her solo album, “Surrender,” featuring enchanting tracks like “Monkeypod Tree” and “Little Star.” Stegall’s collaboration with renowned musician Taimane showcases her growth as an artist in her own right.
With a rich history spanning 15 years, Streetlight Cadence has evolved from a quartet of classically trained musicians to a dynamic musical ensemble that captivates audiences with their vibrant performances. Their recent record, “Midnight,” promoted through a 12-hour busking marathon, gained popularity on platforms like TikTok, where a performance clip garnered millions of views.
As they gear up for their upcoming show at Da Playground in Maui, Streetlight Cadence is excited to showcase their music with guest musicians and a quartet lineup. The band’s commitment to creating memorable musical experiences for their audiences is evident in their performances, which blend energy, talent, and creativity to create a captivating musical journey.
