Contraband Drummer Peter McFarlane Dies from Stroke

Peter McFarlane, a talented drummer who played with bands like Finch and Contraband, passed away on the Gold Coast after suffering a stroke. Throughout his career, McFarlane showcased his skills across various music genres and countries, leaving behind a legacy of technical prowess and mentorship.

McFarlane’s musical journey began at a young age when he started playing the mandolin at six and transitioned to drums at nine. His early experiences included performing with brass bands and orchestras, contributing to his diverse musical palette spanning classical, jazz, and pop genres.

In the early 1970s, McFarlane joined Finch, previously known as Stillwater, as their drummer. The band gained recognition, winning a Pop Poll and securing a record contract. Finch’s singles and albums, including “Out Of Control / And She Sings” and “Thunderbird,” showcased McFarlane’s rhythmic expertise and versatility.

As Finch evolved into Contraband, McFarlane’s drumming style adapted to the band’s harder sound. The group released albums like “Nothing To Hide” under producer Peter Dawkins and singles such as “That’s Your Way” and “Gimme Some Lovin’.” McFarlane eventually left Contraband to join Swanee, continuing to explore new musical ventures.

Beyond his rock roots, McFarlane collaborated with various artists and bands, from Phil Emmanuel’s Kakadu to TwinTowns Services Club. His diverse experiences included exploring Taiko drumming in Japan, African music in Morocco, and performing at blues festivals across Australia, showcasing his love for global percussion traditions.

Apart from his performance career, McFarlane excelled as a sound engineer, studio operator, and producer, displaying his multifaceted talents within the music industry. His passion for instruments like the mandolin and piano, combined with his classical and rock background, made him a respected session drummer and mentor to aspiring musicians.

McFarlane’s early involvement with the Blues inspired him to form his own band, The Peter McFarlane Band, cementing his place in the Australian music scene.
