Geraldine boys basketball team secures victories against Gaston and Boaz
The Geraldine Bulldogs’ varsity boys basketball team had a strong start to the season with wins over the Boaz Pirates and the Gaston Bulldogs. In their first game against Boaz, the Bulldogs secured a narrow 55-54 victory, led by senior Cooper Johnson’s impressive performance of 29 points, along with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Noah Butler also contributed with four points, six rebounds, and two blocks, while Gabe Garcia added six points and six rebounds. Head coach Jeremy Smith commended the team’s tenacity in securing the win, emphasizing their defensive efforts and improved perimeter defense in the second half.
On the opposing side, Boaz saw standout performances from sophomore Logan Williams with 19 points and senior Toby Hamilton with 12 points. The Bulldogs continued their winning streak by defeating the Gaston Bulldogs with a resounding 48-18 victory. Coach Smith highlighted the team’s defensive prowess in the game and acknowledged the need to refine their offensive strategies for upcoming matches. Johnson once again led the charge with 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists, while Butler and A.J. Carter made valuable contributions in points, rebounds, and assists.
Despite their early success, the Bulldogs faced a setback with a 53-41 loss to the Hokes Bluff Eagles in their latest game. Johnson delivered a solid performance with 14 points and three rebounds, supported by Ridge Smith’s all-around game with six points, five assists, and three rebounds. However, offensive struggles in scoring around the paint impacted their overall performance, leading to challenges in defensive transitions late in the game. Coach Smith highlighted the team’s effort but stressed the importance of offensive efficiency moving forward.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs aim to bounce back and return to their winning form as they prepare to face the Sylvania Rams on December 12. With a record of 2-3, the team remains focused on continuous improvement and honing their skills to be competitive in future matchups.
