Raul Malo of The Mavericks Passes Away at Age 60
Raul Malo, the iconic frontman and founder of the groundbreaking progressive country band The Mavericks, has passed away at the age of 60. The news of Malo’s death was confirmed by his wife in a heartfelt post on his official social media accounts. She shared, “At 8:52 pm on December 8th, 2025, my love…our boys’ father…a devoted son and brother…and a friend to so many, gained his angel wings. He was called to do another gig – this time in the sky – and he’s flying high like an eagle.”
Although the exact cause of Malo’s passing has not been disclosed, he had been candid about his health struggles. In 2024, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and in September of the same year, he shared that the disease had spread to his spinal cord and brain. Malo’s health condition led to his hospitalization last week, just before two tribute shows were held in his honor at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville over the weekend. These events aimed to raise funds to support the veteran country artist’s battle with cancer.
Hailing from Florida with Cuban roots, Malo established The Mavericks in Miami in 1989. Known for their unique blend of country, rock, and Latin rhythms, Malo served as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for the group. After The Mavericks went on hiatus in 2000, Malo embarked on a successful solo career, releasing a total of nine albums, including his latest offering, “Say Less,” in 2023.
In addition to his work with The Mavericks, Malo was a member of the supergroup Los Super Seven, alongside esteemed artists like Rick Trevino, David Hidalgo, and Wil-Dog Abers. The band made a notable comeback in 2012, following a reformation led by Malo. The renewed period saw extensive touring and recording, culminating in The Mavericks winning the Americana Music Award for Duo/Group of the Year in 2015 for their eighth studio album, “Mono.”
Malo leaves behind his wife, Betty, and their three sons: Dino, Victor, and Max. His impact on the world of music will forever be remembered, cherished, and celebrated by fans, colleagues, and loved ones alike.
