Video captures plane colliding with car on US highway
Newly released footage captures the moment an aircraft descended from the sky and collided with a car on a congested highway in Florida.
The video, captured by a dashboard camera from behind the incident and shared by Spectrum 13, depicts a “fixed-wing multi-engine aircraft” crashing into a 2023 Toyota Camry traveling southbound on I-95 in Cocoa around 5:45 p.m. local time on December 8, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol through Spectrum News 13. The footage shows the plane plummeting toward the busy rush-hour traffic and smashing into the vehicle while attempting an emergency landing.
In the video, the plane seems to rear-end the Camry, briefly landing on top of it before crashing down to the left, causing sparks to fly upon impact.
The driver of the Camry, a 57-year-old woman, was transported to a nearby hospital with only minor injuries, according to authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol via Spectrum News 13. In contrast, the pilot and passenger, both 27-year-old males who have remained unidentified, emerged unharmed from the crash and cooperated with the ongoing investigation undertaken by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Witnesses to the incident, such as Jim Coffey and his son Peter, recounted their experiences with Spectrum News 13. Jim expressed his shock at the plane’s swift descent and its proximity to his own vehicle, acknowledging the imminent danger it posed.
“When I saw it there, because there’s a plane right there, I was like, ‘Hopefully it lands to the side,'” Peter remarked, sharing his thoughts as he witnessed the collision.
While Peter initially hoped that the plane would avoid hitting the car, he was taken aback when the impact was more direct than expected, with the wheel striking the rear of the vehicle.
Fortunately, the car remained upright following the collision, veering slightly to the side after absorbing the brunt of the impact, Coffee observed.
As authorities delve into the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing and subsequent crash, it has been confirmed that the Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the emergency landing, while the Florida Highway Patrol will handle the crash inquiry, according to Spectrum News 13.
