Colossal Rains, a band featuring ex-Blacklisted members George Hirsch and Jon Nean, has recently released a new single called “Flowers On A Landmine” ahead of their debut album, Feral Sorrow, which is set to be released on January 23rd. The upcoming album was produced by Will Yip, known for his work with bands like Scowl, Title Fight, and Turnstile, and showcases a sound that blends elements of rock and grunge. This collaboration with Yip marks a reunion of sorts, as Blacklisted was one of the first bands to entrust Yip with recording their music.

Lead guitarist and vocalist Gee Hirsch shared some insights into the creation of “Flowers On A Landmine,” revealing that it was the last song written for the album and touches on the theme of depression. Hirsch stated, “I wanted to write a song that held a lot of weight musically, because I’m self-conscious my lyrics could outshine the musicianship, which is unfair.” The opening and refrain lyric, “Tears hold more weight than smiles,” was inspired by the emotional intensity of the song’s closing riff.

Hirsch also shed light on the lyrical inspiration behind the song, explaining that the focus on flowers in the chorus was influenced by a real-life experience he had at work. “One day at work, I had to remove a volunteer rose bush that grew through razor wire. That’s how the chorus was written,” he recounted. Additionally, Hirsch shared that watching the TV show “Flowers” from the UK during the songwriting process added another layer of significance to the track.

Colossal Rains’ debut album, Feral Sorrow, is currently available for pre-order and will be officially released in January. The band lineup includes Gee Hirsch on vocals and lead guitar, David Walling on rhythm guitar, Jon-Michael Nean on bass, and Tyler Mullen on drums. The album promises a collection of tracks that showcase the band’s unique sound and style, with “Flowers On A Landmine” serving as a taste of what listeners can expect from the upcoming release.
