Memories of candles, incense, and more: Do you remember?
Last night, I found myself in Room 1001 of the Cambria hotel in downtown Asheville, gazing out at the bustling intersection of Haywood Street and Page Avenue as I sat at the writing desk. The city was alive with the sounds of live music in anticipation of the 33rd annual “Warren Haynes Presents: The Christmas Jam,” set to take place at the civic center that evening. Amidst the excitement, Stone Temple Pilots were gearing up for the Xmas Jam, adding to the allure of the night.
Dipping in and out of venues like The One Stop and The Orange Peel, I was met with incredible bands and vibrant crowds that left me beaming with joy. However, feeling overwhelmed by the flurry of activity, I sought solace at The Vault for a moment of peace. To my surprise, I found myself in the company of none other than Eric Kretz, the drummer of Stone Temple Pilots, my all-time favorite band that had a profound impact on my life.
Engaging in conversation, Eric and I delved into a range of topics from STP recording sessions to motorcycles, Louisiana, and kinesio tape. For an hour, we shared stories and laughs, forming a genuine connection without the need for recording devices or photos. As our time together came to an end, Eric graciously offered his number, suggesting we meet again in LA or Western North Carolina, where he expressed a keen interest in visiting the Wheels Through Time museum in Maggie Valley.
Reflecting on my admiration for STP, I confessed to Eric that his band was the reason I pursued a career in music journalism. A chance encounter with an ad for STP at the Rolling Rock festival in 2001 sparked a deep sense of inspiration within me, setting me on a path towards a lifelong passion for music. Since my teenage years in Upstate New York, STP has held a special place in my heart, culminating in a life-changing live performance in Montreal in 1999 that solidified my love for live music.
Despite the challenges faced by STP over the years, Scott Weiland, the band’s lead singer, remained my ultimate hero. His unparalleled vocal range and magnetic stage presence left an indelible mark on me, particularly during the iconic performance at the Rolling Rock festival that ignited my passion for music journalism. In every beat and melody, STP continues to inspire me, reminding me of the transformative power of music and the enduring bonds it creates between artists and fans.
