Hinder’s roots can be traced back to Oklahoma City in 2001 when Austin John Winkler decided to start a band after meeting drummer Cody Hanson and guitarist Joe “Blower” Garvey at a college party. The trio wasted no time in crafting original music that resonated with their audience. They kicked off their journey by performing at local venues like The Blue Note in Oklahoma City, gradually attracting a fanbase before finalizing their lineup with bassist Cole Parker in 2002.
In 2003, Hinder released their debut EP titled Far from Close under the independent label Brickden Records, selling about 5,000 copies and sparking interest from major record labels such as Atlantic Records, Roadrunner Records, and Universal Records. After a bidding war, they inked a deal with Universal Records in 2005, setting the stage for their major-label debut and subsequent success.
From 2005 to 2012, Hinder dropped four studio albums with Austin Winkler taking on the role of lead vocalist. Their debut album Extreme Behavior, released in 2005, was a massive hit, achieving triple-platinum status in the United States. Tracks like “Get Stoned” and “Lips of an Angel” catapulted the album to success, with the latter peaking at number three on the Billboard chart and making waves across various countries.
Following the success of Extreme Behavior, Hinder released Take It to the Limit in 2008, an album that debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and garnered gold certification status. Despite facing a pivot after Austin Winkler’s departure in 2013, Hinder found their new lead vocalist in Marshal Dutton, who joined the group in 2015 after collaborating with them as a producer and songwriter. Dutton’s inclusion heralded a fresh start for the band, leading to the release of successful albums like When the Smoke Clears in 2015 and The Reign in 2017.
In 2024, Hinder made a triumphant return to the music scene with their single “Live Without It,” marking their first original track in over five years. The song peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in February 2025, garnering critical acclaim. Throughout their two-decade-long career, Hinder has stayed true to their core lineup, adapting to changes while staying committed to evolving their sound.
