Malmsteen responds to vocalists on his albums

Guitar legend Yngwie Malmsteen is currently embroiled in a dispute over ownership and authorship of his songs with certain singers who have featured on his records. The renowned virtuoso took to Instagram recently to express his frustration, stating that these singers are attempting to profit off his brand and claim ownership of his music.

Malmsteen made it clear that just because singers performed on his solo records, it does not equate to ownership, authorship, or legacy of the songs. He emphasized that being hired to sing on his records does not grant singers the rights to claim song ownership. The singers were paid a salary as work-for-hire contractors to perform the vocal parts that Malmsteen had written, similar to how session musicians like keyboard players, bassists, and drummers are paid for their contributions.

The iconic guitarist further highlighted that if a singer’s only way to gain attention or tour is by leaning on Malmsteen’s brand, using his name, album titles, and catalog, it speaks volumes about who actually built something. Malmsteen questioned the singers’ creative output over the last three to four decades compared to his extensive body of work. While Malmsteen did not name the singers in question, he has collaborated with various vocalists over his illustrious career, including Jeff Scott Soto, Joe Lynn Turner, and others.

Despite working with singers for many years, Malmsteen has increasingly taken on vocal duties since 2012, showcasing his versatility as a musician. In 2012’s “Spellbound,” Malmsteen not only played all the instruments but also provided vocals on every track. Earlier this year, the guitar maestro shared his thoughts on social media guitarists and reflected on the writing and recording process of his second album, “Marching Out,” which marked its 40th anniversary this year.

In the complex landscape of the music industry, disputes over ownership and publishing rights are not uncommon. For artists like Yngwie Malmsteen, who have made significant contributions to music, protecting their creative work and legacy is paramount. As Malmsteen continues to create and innovate in the realm of guitar music, he remains steadfast in his assertion that his music, his brand, and his legacy are not to be exploited or claimed unjustly by others.
