Original Kiss drummer Peter Criss talks about his new self-titled solo album
Veteran drummer Peter Criss is set to release his first new album in nearly two decades today, coinciding with his 80th birthday on December 20th. Criss expressed disbelief at the unexpected turn of events, emphasizing his tireless dedication to his craft over the years. Born Peter George John Criscoula in Brooklyn, Criss embarked on the creation of his latest album, “Peter Criss,” back in 2008, following the release of his solo album “One For All” the previous year. After shelving the initial recordings, guitarist and co-writer Mike McLaughlin encouraged Criss to revisit the project during the pandemic, leading to a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the album’s potential.
Renowned guitarist John 5 praised the album’s quality, prompting Criss to resume work on the project with the help of co-producer Barry Pointer. The album features contributions from various musicians, including bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist Paul Shaffer, and backing vocals from an array of talented artists. Notably, John 5 appears on three tracks, while the album’s artwork was crafted by Matt Montgomery (Piggy D.), known for his work with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. The album includes songs such as “Rock, Rockin’ Rock & Roll,” “Hard Rock Knockers,” and “Walking on Water,” among others.
Despite uncertainties surrounding promotion plans for the album, Criss remains open to participating in signing events in various cities. While acknowledging physical limitations due to age and past surgeries, Criss has not ruled out the possibility of live performances to support the album. Reflecting on his recent honor at the Kennedy Center Honors, where KISS was highlighted, Criss expressed gratitude for the prestigious recognition. The event featured tributes from magician Cris Angel and musical performances by artists like Garth Brooks, Marcus King, and Cheap Trick.
The absence of KISS guitarist Ace Frehley at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony cast a somber tone on the event for Criss. Frehley’s unexpected passing in October deeply affected Criss, who cherished their close relationship. Despite the loss of his dear friend, Criss remains focused on honoring Frehley’s memory and musical legacy. As the music industry pays tribute to Criss’s enduring contributions, fans eagerly await the release of “Peter Criss” and celebrate the remarkable career of the legendary drummer.
