Footage captures parent striking referee, causing unconsciousness post basketball game
A disturbing incident unfolded following a high school basketball game that left Moanalua High School’s assistant athletic director, Natalie Iwamoto, knocked unconscious by an angry parent who punched her. The parent in question, adult corrections officer Aukusitino Noga Jr., faces a trial in February after pleading not guilty to class C felony assault and battery charges related to this incident. Moreover, Iwamoto had to file a temporary restraining order against Noga and his wife, Jamilee Noga, following the altercation.
The incident, which occurred on December 4th after Moanalua High School lost to Mililani, was captured on video and showcased the Noga couple engaging in aggressive behavior towards referees during the game. The couple could be seen yelling, using expletives, and making racial remarks towards the officials. Jamilee Noga was quoted as saying, “You better wake up, ref,” while Aukusitino Noga Jr. added, “White ref, you suck.”
Alton Mamiya, a commissioner with the Hawaii State Basketball Officials Association who is a friend of Iwamoto, expressed his concern over the escalating behavior witnessed at sporting events. Mamiya acknowledged that while disagreements and discontent with refereeing decisions are not uncommon, the level of violence displayed during this incident involving an administration official was unprecedented in his experience. He recounted how the Noga couple’s frustration with a call involving their son led to a heated exchange with the officials during the game, which escalated quickly when Iwamoto intervened.
