In the past year, 2025, my band Couple marked its 30th anniversary, a milestone that has brought me immense joy and pride. As a musician whose preferences lean towards guitar-oriented music, my playlist this year has been dominated by captivating and energetic guitar-based albums. The abundance of talent and creativity in the music industry has made it extremely difficult to narrow down my list of favorite albums to just ten, given the plethora of exceptional releases that have captivated my ears.
Among the albums that have left a lasting impact on me is “God Save The Gun” by Militarie Gun. This young hardcore band has skillfully infused elements of 90s alt-rock and grunge in their music, a combination that speaks to my musical sensibilities. Their ability to craft melodic, ultra-catchy pop songs is showcased in this second album, cementing their position as a standout act in the contemporary music scene. Tracks like “God Owes Me Money,” “BADIDEA,” and “Thought You Were Waving” are just a few examples of the energetic and infectious tunes that make this album a must-listen for fans of guitar-driven music.
Another album that has captured my attention is “You Wanna Fade?” by Alien Boy, a band hailing from Portland. The song “Changes” from this album caught my ear early in the year, drawing me in with its captivating blend of Britpop and power pop melodies. Frontwoman Sonia Weber’s knack for crafting infectious melodies and poetic lyrics shines through in tracks like “Pictures Of You,” evoking a sense of nostalgia and introspection that resonates deeply with listeners. The band’s unique fusion of 90s alternative and shoegaze elements sets them apart and holds immense promise for their future success.
Turnstile’s album “Never Enough” stands out as a significant milestone in their career, propelling them into the upper echelons of the music industry. This album has garnered them coveted festival headline slots alongside established names like Sabrina Carpenter, Lorde, and Kid Cudi. While it took me a few listens to fully appreciate the depth and creativity of this album, I soon realized that it marks a significant progression for the band. Although some tracks may seem reminiscent of their previous work, the album as a whole showcases Turnstile’s evolution and willingness to experiment, such as the seamless incorporation of house music elements.
In a year filled with remarkable musical releases, these albums have left a lasting impression on me and have earned a special place in my rotation. The diverse styles and innovative approaches of Militarie Gun, Alien Boy, and Turnstile exemplify the richness and creativity of the contemporary music landscape. As a dedicated fan of guitar-oriented music, I eagerly anticipate what the future holds for these talented musicians and look forward to discovering more groundbreaking music in the coming year.
