Tool Bassist Justin Chancellor recently discussed the band’s creative process when it comes to crafting intricate time signatures and captivating riffs. In a recent interview, Chancellor expressed his admiration for his bandmates, labeling them as some of the most talented players in the rock music scene.

According to Chancellor, there is a unique vulnerability in Tool’s music that resonates with fans. He praised Maynard as one of the greatest vocalists, Danny as an iconic rock drummer, and highlighted the distinct styles that he and guitarist Adam bring to the table. This cohesion among the band members has contributed to their success and longevity in the music industry.

Acknowledging his contributions to Tool, Chancellor was honored with the lifetime achievement award at the Bass Magazine Awards in January 2025. Joining the band in 1995, following the departure of original bassist Paul D’Amour, Chancellor has played a crucial role in shaping Tool’s sound over the years.

When discussing the songwriting process, Chancellor revealed that the band members often record their ideas on their phones before coming together for practice. Both Chancellor and Jones work on creating intricate riffs, while Carey focuses on building complex rhythms that span across various time signatures. Once individual ideas are fleshed out, the band collaborates to merge these elements into cohesive songs.

In his role as the bassist, Chancellor sees himself as the glue that holds everything together in the lower register. He emphasizes that the bass guitar plays a crucial role in blending the kick, guitar strings, and vocals, creating a harmonious sonic landscape for the band’s music.

Tool’s latest album, Fear Inoculum, topped the charts in 2019 after a 13-year hiatus between records. Despite the success of the album, Chancellor expressed a desire for the band to work more swiftly on new material. However, he also acknowledged that art cannot be rushed and does not adhere to a specific schedule.

As Tool continues to evolve and push boundaries in the realm of progressive rock music, Chancellor’s insights offer a glimpse into the band’s meticulous approach to crafting their unique sound. With a combination of technical precision, creative collaboration, and mutual respect among band members, Tool remains a formidable force in the music industry.
