I will always treasure playing rhythm guitar with Ace on stage for Cold Gin
Ace Frehley, the late Kiss co-founder, was a hero I had the privilege of meeting multiple times – an experience I will forever treasure. Despite meeting numerous fans, he always welcomed me with a warm smile and a familiar greeting, making me feel special. His sense of humor and storytelling abilities never failed to entertain me. The bond we formed transcended professional connections, evolving into a genuine friendship that I deeply cherish. Reflecting on playing rhythm guitar on stage with Ace during Dimebash charity concerts still feels surreal and remains a significant item ticked off my bucket list.
During a guitar show in New York City in the early 2000s where I performed a Marshall demo, I paid tribute to Ace by playing a segment from his iconic solo in She from Alive!. I hesitantly approached him afterward, apologizing for my impromptu performance. To my relief, he not only appreciated my rendition but also humorously remarked that I didn’t quite match his skills, lightening the moment with his trademark laughter. This exchange exemplified classic Ace – witty, humble, and effortlessly entertaining.
One standout memory of Ace was his heartfelt tribute speech honoring the late Abbott brothers at Vinnie Paul’s funeral service. Serving as the emcee, I witnessed Ace’s poignant, emotional, and humorous address, capturing the essence of a life well-lived and celebrated. Contrary to the common advice of avoiding interactions with heroes, my encounters with Ace were filled with laughter, inspiration, and unforgettable moments that I hold dear.
The last time I crossed paths with Ace was after his remarkable performance at the Eagles Theater in Wabash, Indiana, in 2022. Despite being 71 years old at the time, his energy and passion on stage rivaled that of artists half his age, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed his showmanship. Reflecting on his captivating storytelling skills, I remember a humorous anecdote he shared about acquiring a white-gold watch from a clueless pawn shop dealer, leaving me in stitches with his humorous narrative. Ace’s ability to entertain and inspire, both on and off the stage, solidified his legacy as a unique artist and individual who will forever be remembered.
As we mourn the loss of Ace, my thoughts are with his loved ones, family, friends, and fellow musicians. His unparalleled talent, infectious personality, and lasting impact on the music industry will continue to resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike. Thank you, Ace, for the unforgettable memories, the timeless music, and the laughter – your spirit will endure through the legacy you leave behind.
