Surveillance cameras installed along the Brenta River to combat littering
Etra, a multi-utility company operating in the Brenta river basin, has installed two video surveillance cameras as part of the European Interreg Italy-Croatia project “Wastereduce.” The project aims to reduce the environmental impact of waste in natural areas. The cameras have been strategically placed along the Brenta River to combat the illegal dumping of waste, a problem that has been plaguing the area.
According to Etra, the areas where the cameras have been installed have been experiencing continuous waste abandonment, highlighting two main issues. Firstly, there is an accumulation of waste from recreational activities like picnics and bivouacs left along the riverbanks. Secondly, there are instances of environmental crimes where private citizens dispose of bulky waste and hazardous materials illegally. The cameras are operational 24 hours a day and serve as a deterrent and investigative tool to catch perpetrators in the act.
The recorded images captured by the cameras will be made available to local law enforcement for identification purposes and potential legal action. This cooperative effort between Etra and the local police aims to hold those responsible for waste abandonment accountable and enforce sanctions under the law, including criminal prosecution for severe cases.
The installation of the cameras is not only about maintaining urban decorum but also crucial for public health and the preservation of the river ecosystem. Abandoned waste, especially hazardous materials, left to the elements can release harmful substances that seep into the soil, posing a direct threat to the water table and the quality of the Brenta River water.
