The Dallas Cowboys have invested a whopping $300 million in renovations, with a primary focus on the playing field.
The most noticeable change is the switch from artificial turf to natural grass. FIFA regulations mandate that all World Cup venues must have natural grass, prompting AT&T Stadium to make the necessary adjustment. This shift is not unique to AT&T Stadium; Houston’s NRG Stadium is also making a similar transition.
Instead of growing the grass locally, AT&T Stadium has opted for a novel approach. The World Cup pitch will be cultivated on a farm in Colorado and then transported to Texas just weeks before the tournament kicks off. To maintain the grass’s quality during transit, refrigerated semi-trucks will be used to ensure a seamless transfer from farm to field. Additionally, a backup field will be grown to address any unforeseen issues, emphasizing the meticulous planning put into hosting the World Cup.
Chad Estis, a Cowboys executive, acknowledged that this process presents a new frontier for the stadium. While temporary grass fields have been installed in the past for events like the Gold Cup, preparing for the World Cup demands an entirely different strategy. This time, the field is being meticulously engineered to meet the standards of elite global-level play, underscoring the attention to detail required for such a prestigious event.
AT&T Stadium holds significant prominence in the 2026 World Cup, set to host nine matches – the most of any venue, including a semifinal on July 14. Houston follows closely behind with seven scheduled games, concluding with a final match on July 4.
