Jamey Johnson collaborates with Riley Green on track “Smoke”
Alabama native musicians Jamey Johnson and Riley Green recently joined forces to release a new song titled “Smoke,” which they co-wrote with Erik Dylan. Johnson and Green share a common bond, having attended the same college, Jacksonville State, and both share a profound love for their home state of Alabama and its residents. Johnson expressed his admiration for Green’s musical talents, appreciating his writing and singing skills.
The inspiration for “Smoke” originated from Green’s idea, and the trio quickly got together to create the song in about an hour. Johnson found the collaboration intriguing, noting the unique sound created by the song’s contrasting elements. The concept of the song revolves around a man who remains unbothered by his partner’s grievances, symbolized by the smoke in the lyrics.
Recorded at The Cash Cabin and Big Gassed Studios, “Smoke” was produced by Kyle Lehning and Jim “Moose” Brown. Despite having worked with Lehning on a Randy Travis tribute album previously, this project marked the first time Johnson collaborated with him on one of his own songs. Johnson expressed his delight in working with Green and Dylan on the writing process and Lehning and Brown during the recording sessions, describing it as a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Although Johnson and Green have performed together on stage in the past, “Smoke” represents their first official studio collaboration. Green found the process of writing and recording the song with Johnson particularly enjoyable, emphasizing the natural synergy they shared after touring together earlier in the year. Johnson commended Green’s sense of humor, highlighting their lighthearted banter and mutual respect for each other, acknowledging a recent incident where he felt he was overly critical of Green in a public video.
Fans of country music can now stream “Smoke” to enjoy the musical chemistry between Jamey Johnson and Riley Green. The duo’s collaborative efforts have resulted in a heartfelt and uplifting song that captures the essence of their shared love for Alabama and their passion for creating authentic country music. With Johnson’s seasoned songwriting skills and Green’s fresh perspective, “Smoke” promises to be a standout addition to both artists’ repertoires.
