Kiki Wong regrets gear choices for live Smashing Pumpkins set
Kiki Wong, a guitarist from the band Smashing Pumpkins, has a remarkable memory for Ibanez S series model numbers, making her quite unique in the world of guitar players. She shares her story of buying her first serious guitar, a Slammer by Hamer, which came in a beginner pack that included a Fender 15-watt amp, picks, and a strap. Wong’s early inspiration for gear came from guitar magazines and visits to Guitar Center, where she discovered the stunning Ibanez S series, particularly the S40DXQM model.
After pooling money with her mom, Wong was able to purchase the Ibanez S series model, a guitar that she yearned for as it had a ‘Z Tremolo’ floating bridge, allowing her to experiment with Dimebag Darrell’s divebombs. It was a game-changer for her playing style and a dream come true to finally own the guitar of her desires. Sadly, the guitar was stolen out of her car in Downtown LA in 2015, a heartbreaking loss for Wong.
Years later, the last guitar Wong acquired was a Strandberg Boden Essential guitar for her tech on tour with Smashing Pumpkins, Pat Ryan. Ryan’s dedication to keeping her gear in top shape led Wong to gift him this special instrument to show her appreciation for his hard work. While expressing her love for guitars, Wong reflects on trying to live a minimalist life but admits that her extensive guitar collection counters that effort.
Regarding incredible finds or bargains, Wong recalls an amp story instead. Upon joining the She Demons, a punk-rock supergroup formed by Jerry Only of The Misfits, she needed a new amp for their upcoming tour. Wong stumbled upon a vintage Marshall amp on Craigslist that she acquired just in time for their 34-date run across the US and Canada. This experience highlights her passion for finding quality gear and the dedication she has to her craft as a guitarist.
