Tony Iommi announces upcoming solo album release later this year
In a heartfelt New Year’s Day video message, Tony Iommi, the legendary heavy metal craftsman, recapped a year characterized by both highs and lows. Amidst the backdrop of 2025, he announced the long-anticipated arrival of his third solo album slated for 2026.
The previous year marked a bittersweet period for the Black Sabbath guitarist. It started with a historic reunion with his original bandmates, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, for a star-studded final performance in Birmingham. A few weeks later, the sudden loss of Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne cast a pall over their seemingly celebratory farewell.
Reflecting on this time, Iommi touched upon numerous significant projects from the previous year, encompassing the triumphant return of Black Sabbath – The Ballet, a surprising partnership with Robbie Williams, and various releases linked to his legacy. However, the driving force behind his message was the announcement of his long-overdue solo work.
Addressing fans directly in the video, Iommi confirmed, “I shall have definitely, definitely my solo album out.” His eagerness and enthusiasm for the project were palpable as he expressed his hopes for the audience to enjoy the music. Additionally, he revealed the ongoing production of a documentary chronicling his life and career through Gibson, adding yet another milestone to his illustrious career.
During a July 2025 appearance on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, Iommi provided insight into the status of his solo album, acknowledging the pause in production due to Black Sabbath’s final show. Yet, he expressed a renewed focus on completing the album, emphasizing its instrumental nature while disclosing his collaboration with a single vocalist, deviating from the guest-heavy approach of his previous work.
Adding more details to the upcoming album, Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler unveiled that Iommi is collaborating with a renowned singer from Sweden. Despite the logistical challenges delaying potential collaborations, Butler hinted at their possible involvement in the project by June 2026, touting Iommi’s recent work as compelling music in the making.
As fans eagerly await the release of Tony Iommi’s third solo album this year, the anticipation for new music from the iconic guitarist continues to grow. With past experiences woven into the fabric of his creative process, the forthcoming album promises to captivate audiences with an evolving sound reflective of his enduring legacy.
