KITTIE discusses their legacy, evolution, and current sound
Many fans often believe that Kittie’s inaugural album, Spit, is the group’s most prominent work. However, for the band members themselves, the essence of Kittie is not rooted in their beginnings but in the evolution they have experienced over time.
When asked which album currently best represents the band, guitarist Mercedes Lander expressed that she believes everything post-Spit holds that honor. Vocalist and drummer Morgan Lander shared a similar sentiment, noting that each new release tends to assume the role of the definitive album when it is created.
For Morgan, starting work on In The Black marked a new chapter for the band, introducing elements of a slightly altered sonic landscape. The emotional and creative space the band inhabited during the production of In The Black highlights the unity and contentment the members experienced during that phase.
Bassist Ivy Jenkins reflected on the happiness and collective energy that the band brought to the studio during the making of In The Black, a sentiment that continued into Fire. Interestingly, Jenkins mentioned that despite the heavy and negative musical themes, there was a palpable sense of positivity and exhilaration among the band members during that time.
In light of their 2017 documentary Kittie: Origins/Evolutions, the band openly discussed their desire for distance from Spit. The album, originally penned and recorded when they were in their teen years, signified both their breakthrough and a moment of creative challenge.
Over time, Morgan’s perspective on Spit has softened, acknowledging that while the album contains raw and authentic elements that many fans appreciate, the band quickly outgrew that level of musicianship post-touring. The distance, growth, and experience have allowed Morgan to reconnect with the album, appreciating it for what it is while embracing the progress and evolution they have undergone since then.
Looking ahead, Kittie has announced a series of tour dates for 2026 in locations spanning different parts of the globe, promising a continuation of their musical journey and evolution as a band. The upcoming shows offer an exciting opportunity to witness the band’s growth and transformation over the years.
