Peter Gabriel, the acclaimed artist behind the 1982 hit “I Have The Touch,” has recently unveiled a new album titled oi. This latest release comes on the heels of his 2023 album, i/o, marking Gabriel’s return to creating new music after more than two decades. oi continues Gabriel’s tradition of two-letter album titles, following in the footsteps of his iconic 1986 album So.

In a statement about oi, Gabriel hinted at a thematic connection to i/o, which delved into humanity’s relationship with nature. He described the albums as representing his “lumpy bits”, with i/o focusing on the inside having a new way out and oi exploring the outside having a new way in. This suggests a deep exploration of human existence and connectivity in Gabriel’s upcoming work.

Similar to the release strategy for i/o, Gabriel plans to unveil a new track from oi on every full moon. Each track will be accompanied by two different mixes – Tchad Blake’s Dark-Side Mix and Mark ‘Spike’ Stent’s Bright-Side Mix – along with a piece of visual art. The first release from oi, “Been Undone” in Dark-Side Mix form, coincides with the Wolf Moon and features artwork by São Paulo artist Janaina Mello Landini.

In an introductory video, Gabriel shared insights into the creation process behind “Been Undone.” The song, nearly eight minutes long, was developed alongside longtime collaborators Tony Levin, David Rhodes, and Manu Katché at Real World Studios. Drawing inspiration from a thirty-year-old demo named “Sit,” the track incorporates rich musical layers, including Gabriel’s keyboard skills and Richard Evans’ mandolin melodies.

Gabriel’s artistic vision for oi extends beyond just music, with themes of introspection, societal transitions, and the role of artists in shaping the future. He emphasizes the importance of reflecting on the changing landscape of technology, such as AI, quantum computing, and brain-computer interfaces, through creative expressions. For Gabriel, art serves as a mirror to society, offering perspective and insight into our interconnected world.

While oi’s release date remains unspecified, fans can anticipate the unveiling of the Bright-Side Mix in the near future, followed by another track on the second full moon of the year, Feb. 1. Gabriel’s innovative approach to music and visual art promises a unique and immersive experience for listeners as they embark on a journey through oi’s intricate landscapes of sound and meaning.
