“Definitely Sweet Child O’ Mine. It’s just got – the range of that vocal line is ridiculous, right? I used to be able to sing Welcome to the Jungle very well, but not so much anymore. Because I think, at the time when I was doing it with Slash and the Conspirators, there was something there that I could tap into. But Sweet Child, that’s a tough one. That’s a tough one for me.”

Myles Kennedy is a man of contradictions. On one hand, he is the cerebral force behind writing lyrics and recording music for various projects like Alter Bridge, Slash and the Conspirators, and his solo work. On the other hand, he is the bold, fearless performer who throws himself on stage night after night without a moment’s hesitation. He believes that to front a rock band, you have to be smart enough to create the music but silly enough to fearlessly perform it.

In a recent interview ahead of Alter Bridge’s eponymous studio album release, Kennedy shared insights into his approach to vocals, the influences that have shaped his voice, and how he takes care of his instrument while on the road. He credits artists like Stevie Wonder, Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, and Ella Fitzgerald as significant influences on his vocal style and performance.

When discussing his identity as a vocalist, Kennedy admits that it took him a long time to find his own voice among the many artists he admired. He views guitar playing as a continuous learning journey but feels content with his vocal abilities and aims to focus more on songwriting. Despite the demands of his vocal range, Kennedy maintains his voice by leading a disciplined lifestyle on tour, prioritizing rest and avoiding behaviors that could strain his vocal cords.

Kennedy’s collaboration with Alter Bridge producer, Michael “Elvis” Baskette, has brought a unique approach to recording vocals that involves intense bursts of singing followed by short breaks to keep the voice fresh and dynamic. This method has allowed Kennedy to channel his live energy into the studio recordings, resulting in powerful and authentic vocal performances.

When asked about his karaoke experiences, Kennedy recalls a memorable but terrifying performance of Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” during a drunken night out with his bandmates. Despite his fears of karaoke, Kennedy acknowledges the challenge of replicating Axl Rose’s vocal prowess on Guns N’ Roses songs, especially the demanding range of tracks like “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Welcome to the Jungle.”

As a seasoned performer with a voice that has been tested by time and experience, Myles Kennedy continues to push his vocal boundaries while maintaining a deep respect for his instrument and the craft of singing. Through his dedication to his art and his willingness to explore new musical horizons, Kennedy embodies the essence of a true rock frontman.
